This November brings an exciting month for Japanese enthusiasts in the UK, as there will be some fantastic Japanese related events taking place in London and across the country. You can find the date and details of each one in our Japanese Events in November calendar below.
If you have an interest in Sake, West London Wine School is holding an “Introduction to Sake Tasting” workshop and “WSET Level 1 Award in Sake” course to explore the world of sake as well as “Sake Tasting” event in collaboration with The Art of Tasting. Also, if you haven’t tried Japanese Wines yet, you might like to attend the “Discover Japanese Wines” workshop.
For those who are more into Japanese culture, there’s the “Autumn Japan Sakura at Lauriston Castle” to have fun while admiring the beautiful Kyoto Friendship Garden in Edinburgh, ‘Japan FEST” to enjoy Japanese culture with lively performances in Sheffield, and “InsideJapan & Toyama Cultural Adventures” to find out more about Toyama through its culture in Bristol.
Apart from those mentioned above, other interesting Japanese events in November include the “PAWAA UP! LVL.4 Live Japanese Music Night’ for Japanese Pop & Rock and “Pop-Rap Anime Night 2” for Japanese Anime-themed live music. You can also try your hand at Origami Paper Folding, Shodo Japanese Calligraphy and Japanese Woodblock Printmaking.
November 5th: Japanese Conversation Group

The Japanese Conversation Group provides a friendly and informal atmosphere for Japanese speakers of all nationalities to come together and speak Japanese – intermediate level recommended. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month. They begin at 7.00pm and finish around 11.00pm.

November 7th: Happy Origami Workshop

This is a wonderful Origami experience where you will learn about Japanese traditions. Just by folding paper, you will be happy and calm and before long it will bring a smile to your face. Japanese Origami artist Toshiko, a member of British Origami Society, will be teaching you how to fold beautiful flowers like tulips and lilies, kimono book marks, lovely gift & jewellery boxes and kawaii dress bunting.

November 9th & 10th: Woodblock Printing Workshop with Hiroko Imada

This half-day workshop, Japanese woodblock printing (moku-hanga), is an introductory course to learn the basic process by creating your own design, carving a block and printing in black and white on Japanese paper. No experience is necessary for this workshop.

November 15th: School of SHODO – ‘The Art of Japanese Calligraphy’

You’ll have 90min x2 (3 hours) of hands-on instruction, including 1 to 1 help and learn essential brush movements, calligraphy techniques and how to use all four treasures of the studies, brush, paper, ink and ink stone. You will also receive tips, advice and detailed insights from a practicing calligrapher: plenty of inspiration and techniques to experience the mindfulness process.

For those new to sake, this qualification offers a hands-on introduction to the world of sake. You’ll explore the main styles and types of sake through sight, smell and taste to develop an understanding of the key factors affecting flavours and aromas. Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

November 18th: The Art of Tasting – Sake Tasting

Join flavour chemistry specialist Sietze Wijma and sake educator Sarah Stewart at this unique event, where you will learn to identify 10 important flavour compounds in sake. This is the perfect event for intermediate to advanced sake students and professionals, but wine and beer students interested in learning more about the exciting world of sake are also warmly welcome – some prior sake knowledge is encouraged, but not required.

Sarah, Sake expert and tutor, will cover the basics of history, ingredients, production and classification, introduce the major styles and show how basic wine tasting principles can easily be applied to sake. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of one of cinema’s most iconic monsters, Japan House London is screening five films including the original Godzilla and the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One (two films in November and one in December). Special Edition ‘Series 0’ Shinkansen Nose Cone

Japan House London is collaborating with Central Japan Railway Company to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen by presenting this very special piece of history and highlighting Japanese technology and innovation. The special edition nose cone, displayed for the first time outside Japan, was used for the final journey of the ‘Series 0’ on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen line.
